What is a root canal treatment?
Root canal treatment is used when the inside of your tooth – called the pulp – becomes infected or inflamed, often due to deep decay, cracks, or injury. The aim is simple: remove the infection, clean and seal the space, and keep the outer tooth intact. It’s a way of saving a tooth that might otherwise need to be taken out.
Here's what it can be used for
- Treating tooth infection – When the nerve or pulp is infected, root canal treatment removes bacteria and stops the spread.
- Saving a natural tooth – Instead of removing it, root canal treatment keeps your original tooth in place.
- Relieving pain and swelling – Infected teeth can cause severe discomfort – this treatment brings fast, long-lasting relief.
- Preventing future problems – Left untreated, infections can worsen and even lead to abscesses or bone loss.
- Protecting your smile – Once the tooth is treated and crowned, it looks and works just like the rest of your teeth.

Why root canal treatments are important
Root canal treatments are a safe, effective way to remove infection and avoid losing a tooth.

You can keep your natural tooth – no need for an extraction or replacement.

Pain and pressure from infection are relieved, often from the first appointment.

It prevents the spread of infection to other teeth or parts of the mouth.

The treated tooth can be restored to full strength with a natural-looking crown.

How does root canal treatment work – and what you can expect
Your first visit will be focused on finding out exactly what’s going on. If we suspect an infection inside the tooth, we’ll take X-rays to see how far it’s spread. If a root canal is needed, we’ll explain everything clearly – no pressure, no jargon.
During the procedure itself, we’ll make sure you’re fully numb and comfortable. The infected pulp is removed from inside the tooth, and the area is carefully cleaned, shaped, and disinfected. Once it’s clear of bacteria, we fill the root canals with a special material to seal everything off.
The final step is often to restore the tooth with a crown – this protects it and brings back full function. In some cases, this is done at a second visit. We always give you time to ask questions and go at a pace that suits you. Most patients say it was much easier than they expected.

FAQs
Here’s what real patients ask us most often about root canal treatment.
Is a root canal painful?
Not with modern care – we use local anaesthetic to numb the tooth completely. Most people feel relief afterwards, not pain.
How do I know if I need one?
Common signs include toothache, sensitivity to hot/cold, swelling, or a darkened tooth. We’ll do X-rays to check for sure.
How long does it take?
Most root canals take 1–2 visits, depending on the tooth. We’ll let you know exactly what to expect at your first appointment.
What if I’m nervous about treatment?
That’s totally fine – we’re used to helping nervous patients and can talk through sedation options if needed.
Can the tooth still get infected again?
It’s rare, but possible. We seal everything thoroughly and fit a crown if needed to prevent future issues. Regular check-ups help too.
